Uses of Datura in Ancient Medicine:
In ancient India, Datura was commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine for Bronchial Congestion and symptoms of Asthma.
The leaves of Datura contain an Active Alkaloid called Atropine- which were ironically smoked by the ancient People.
The Chinese would use Datura as anesthesia to numb Patients while performing Surgery.
The Zuni would even use it as an analgesic to knock patients unconscious during the resetting of broken bones.
Datura’s Spiritual Uses:
The ancient Peoples of Western States such as what would called California today, would consume several Datura Seeds from it’s Thorn Apple Seed Pod. By doing so, they claimed to have visions in which they would “commune with deities”.
American Cherokee Indians would use D. stramonium for its psychoactive properties during sacred ceremonies.
Datura was even used as a tool for “opening the mind” by African Lay Priest Students (Ethiopia) which would help them to utilize their imaginations, and access creative thought processes.
