Create a talking point in your home with these tropical curiosities. Wide spreading wing-like bracts accompanied by long trailing whiskers up to 12 inches long hold a cluster of flowers succeeded by heavy berries.
Known for it’s long “whiskers” that emanate from the flower scape. The scape is nearly black in color, with some purple as are the long , broad leaf blades which give the plant the name of “Black Bat Flower”. This Malaysian perennial is always in demand. Produces 2′ leaves, 10″ wide with angular pleats in the leaves. Requires constant warmth, high humidity & bright light. Dormant in winter months.
Truly a collector’s specimen, this exquisite flower is tall and majestic in greenhouses, sun rooms, and on hot, humid and shady porches.
Growing :
Sow the seeds on the surface of a sand/loam mixture. Keep warm, and damp (NOT WET). Maintain high humidity. Likes a mixture of sun and shade. Can be slow to germinate – up to 3 weeks
